Add a public domain to your public SharePoint Online Site

If you use your custom name with Office 365 you also want to redirect www to your public SharePoint Online Site.

E.G. you are using contoso.com as a domain for Exchange Online & Lync Online

These are the steps necessary for Small Business plans.

In Small Business Plans you can allow Office 365 to manage your DNS. If this is the case, the steps are somewhat different.

If your DNS settings are managed by Office 365:

  1. Make sure contoso.com is added as a domain
  2. Go to Admin > SharePoint and enter the SharePoint Online Administration Center
  3. Under Website, click Manage your public website.
  4. On the Manage public website page, next to your website, click Change address.
  5. In the drop-down list, choose your domain name

If your DNS settings are managed by a DNS Registrar

  1. Make sure contoso.com is added as a domain
  2. Add a CNAME record www to name.sharepoint.com where name is your custome domain e.g. contoso.sharepoint.com
  3. Click on Change your website address and choose your domain name

These are the steps necessary for Enterprise & Midsize plans.

  1. Add www.contoso.com to your Office 365 Tenant and assign the purpose to SharePoint Online
  2. Enter your DNS records
  3. Add a CNAME record www to contoso-public.sharepoint.com -> You’ll find the exact url in your SharePoint Online Administration Center
  4. Go to Admin > SharePoint and enter the SharePoint Online Administration Center
  5. Select the checkbox next to your public site
  6. Click on Domain Websites
  7. Choose www.contoso.com
  8. Save the new URL
